Case Study on a first grade student at Signal Hill
PROPOSITION 3: Teachers Are Responsible for Managing and Monitoring Student Learning.
*NBCTS DELIVER EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION. THEY MOVE FLUENTLY THROUGH A RANGE OF INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES, KEEPING STUDENTS MOTIVATED, ENGAGED AND FOCUSED.
*THEY KNOW HOW TO ENGAGE STUDENTS TO ENSURE A DISCIPLINED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, AND HOW TO ORGANIZE INSTRUCTION TO MEET INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS.
*NBCTS KNOW HOW TO ASSESS THE PROGRESS OF INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AS WELL AS THE CLASS AS A WHOLE.
*THEY USE MULTIPLE METHODS FOR MEASURING STUDENT GROWTH AND UNDERSTANDING, AND THEY CAN CLEARLY EXPLAIN STUDENT PERFORMANCE TO PARENTS.

Rationale
The rationale for choosing the research paper on the impact of IDEA was to point out the challenges and impacts how schools can assess students with disabilities. IDEA ensures a child's IEP includes all necessary modifications so that they can participate in division-wide or state-wide assessments. Additionally, teachers are able to adapt the way they teach to accommodate students with disabilities.
The case study was chosen as an artifact as it demonstrates the ability to assess student growth. The student that was the focus of the case study had attention difficulties. There were four lessons used in the case study, with this particular student's progress noted each week. The lessons utilizes various methods and teaching techniques that demonstrate my ability to teach all students. As an educator, I know that not all children learn the same and it is in their best interest that I use as many techniques and tools as possible to enable them to succeed.

reflection
In the era of standardized testing, IDEA has allowed students with disabilities to use modifications/accommodations when taking assessments. This allows those students to have the same opportunity to pass the exams as the students without disabilities. The modifications benefit students with disabilities and teachers as well. By using the modifications, teachers can successfully teach their students and allow them to learn the best way possible.
The case study allowed me to understand how to help this student learn how to be as successful as possible. Working with this student in a flexible grouping environment, this allowed him work work in small groups or with a partner, rather than a large group. A large group would have caused to much of a distraction for the student. The use of a peer helper was a technique that this student responded to very well. By observing the peer helper, who was very successful at the skill, the student in the case study was able to observe and model the desired behavior.
